Sports Broadcaster Vin Scully Dies August 2, 2022
Vin Scully, nationally known sports broadcaster and voice of the Dodgers, died on August 2, 2022. He was 94.
Scully was born in the Bronx, in 1927, to Irish immigrants. His father died when he was young, and the family moved to Brooklyn.
Even as a young boy, Scully was fascinated by sports broadcasting. He said, “We had this big old radio, and I would crawl underneath it, and the speakers would be directly over my head. Something would happen, and the announcer would get excited. The crowd would roar, the sound would come out of that speaker like water out of a showerhead, and it seemed to wash down on me.”
Scully favored the New York Giants when he was young, although he would later gain fame for promoting the Giants’ rival, the Brooklyn Dodgers. From 1950 to 2016 — an impressive 67 seasons — Vin Scully was the play-by-play announcer for the Dodgers, first in Brooklyn and following the team’s move to Los Angeles.
Fans loved and trusted Scully, for good reason. He explained, “I like to think that if I say that somebody made a good catch, the fans will believe me because I will also say so if he butchered the play.”
Scully was versatile. He provided commentary for nationally televised sports in addition to baseball, including football, golf, and tennis.
Scully received many awards for his achievements as a broadcaster: in 1982, he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame; in 1983, he received a Peabody Award; in 2014, he received the Commissioner’s Historic Achievement Award; and in 2016, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He also has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Trivia buffs will appreciate learning that Gillian Anderson’s character on “The X-Files” was named in Vin’s honor.
Vin Scully died at his home in Hidden Hills, California. He is survived by four children, two stepchildren, 16 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
