Singer and Actress Olivia Newton-John Dies August 8, 2022
Olivia Newton-John, the singer and actress known for her iconic role in the movie “Grease,” died on August 8, 2022. She was 73.
She was born in Cambridge, England, in 1948, but her family moved to Melbourne, Australia, when she was five. She won the top prize on a TV show called “Sing, Sing, Sing,” which launched her career in Australia and England.
Newton-John gained fame in the US with her 1973 hit “Let Me Be There,” followed by “I Honestly Love You,” “Have You Never Been Mellow,” and “Please Mr. Please.”
In 1978, she starred with John Travolta in the musical movie phenomenon “Grease.”
Other movies followed, including “Xanadu” with Gene Kelly in his final screen role and “Two of a Kind” with Travolta once again. Newton-John said, “I’ve had many lives in music. I’ve had country when I started, then I crossed over into pop. I had ‘Xanadu’ and ‘Grease,’ many songs in between. I feel very grateful.”
The singer was married twice. With her first husband, actor Matt Lattanzi, she had one daughter, Chloe.
In 2005, Newton-John’s then-boyfriend Patrick McDermott was lost at sea during a fishing trip. He was never found.
Newton-John was twice diagnosed with breast cancer, in the 1990s and in 2017. Her willingness to share her experiences publicly won her the respect of fans across the globe.
Her second husband, John Easterling, the CEO of Amazon Herb Company, helped her to explore treatment options. The couple co-founded the Olivia Newton-John Foundation Fund, which funds research on plant-based therapies. She said, “I’m very lucky to be married to a wonderful man who is a plant medicine man, and he has great knowledge.”
In 2018, she was diagnosed with cancer once again, this time at the base of her spine.
Olivia Newton-John died at her ranch in Southern California. She is survived by her husband and daughter.
